Winner! BioBlitz receives national recognition
Mary Cairncross BioBlitz is recognised at the prestigious Banksia Foundation Sustainability Awards, the longest-running sustainability awards in the world and recognised as the zenith in sustainability in Australia.
Last night, our vertical treetop Mary Cairncross BioBlitz was recognised at the prestigious Banksia Foundation Sustainability Awards, at the national gala ceremony in Sydney.
Our BioBlitz project took out the government category, for excellence in working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Banksia Sustainability Awards are the longest-running sustainability awards in the world and recognised as the zenith in sustainability in Australia. To even be a finalist for these awards was already a phenomenal feat. The recognition was alongside some of the most impactful, innovative projects leading sustainability, including infrastructure leaders ISCA, drone-mapping trailblazers Fujitsu and Ewaste warriors Substation33.
Banksia judges were impressed by how the Mary Cairncross BioBlitz captured the imagination of the community and used new technologies to generate interest in biodiversity conservation.
"It made ecological science accessible and biodiversity visible to the broader community with long lasting impact," the judges said.
The project was recognised for it's diverse approach and genuine partnerships between stakeholders.
Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond stated, "It was inspiring to see how our finalists and winners are working with the SDGs and how this is a great example for others to emulate. This is encouraging and we know that acknowledging leadership and innovation is such an impetus for our finalists and winners to keep going on their amazing journey. They should be very proud of the impact they are having.”
The Mary Cairncross BioBlitz organisers share this special recognition with the entire BioBlitz team, a brilliant group of Jinibara Traditional Owners, scientists from many fields, artists, volunteers, students and arborists who dedicated their knowledge, research experience and learnings, as well as hours of effort to the BioBlitz.
