Come and see a collection of new works by local artist Jim Cox. Friend or Foe highlights the beauty of native fauna and the threats posed by introduced and invasive species.
Jim Cox has been painting and drawing all his life and uses this skill to communicate environmental conservation goals. His well-loved work features in Les Hall's 2020 book The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, the 2022 SOS, Save our Species and its 2023 follow-on POP, Protect our Pollinators.
Through SOS and POP, Jim's artwork alongside words by Elaine Green, sought to introduce the reader to native animals, and to develop respect and care for them. In their third publication FOF, Friend or Foe, Elaine and Jim explore the impact of introduced animals and the devastating changes to the Australian environment. From cloven hooves to feral cats, Jim wants visitors to the exhibition to appreciate the fragility of our diverse native species.
Jim Cox uses any medium available but prefers acrylic, oil pastel or gouache which allow an immediacy in expressing ideas and observations, and produce vibrant colours. At times Jim's frivolous titles or rendition hides a serious intent. He is passionate about preserving native fauna and flora .. and upholding the ancient craft of art-making.
