Giant king cricket

Australia’s largest cricket

The Giant King Cricket is Australia’s largest cricket and only found in rainforests in south-eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales. They are nocturnal and remain in their burrows during the day.

Giant King Crickets are omnivores, they hunt live insects and feed on rotting fruits found on the forest floor. Although they are flightless their powerful hind legs can propel them up. Crickets have been found in trees at head height, so scientists believe they also forage in trees.

When disturbed, the cricket can emit a loud hiss and swing their body in a threatening display.

Researchers have noted that the Giant King Crickets seem to be most active after rain showers on wet nights. They are related to New Zealand’s Giant Wetas and can be seen in gardens on the Blackwall Range.
