Looking for a new adventure on the Sunshine Coast and something challenging you haven’t tried yet?

Check out the new suspension bridge over Horseman Creek at Lake Weyba!

Sunshine Coast Council has made existing trails at Lake Weyba more accessible by installing four footbridges, fire trails and a 24-metre-long suspension bridge.

The suspension bridge across Horseman Creek finalises the foreshore nature trail linking Lake Weyba to Peregian.

The three legs of the trail are located at trail heads with sign posted directions:

•           Charlotte Drive to Lake Weyba

•           Lakewood Drive to Barbara Road

•           Annie Drive to Barbara Road.

Improvement works also included three wayfinding signs, 25 wayfinding bollards and resurfacing of one kilometre of the fire trail.

Access to the trails is classed at the National Grading System as Grade 4.

This is for longer, rougher, steeper trails that are not always well-signposted or provide a clear track. Grade 4 trails are for experienced bushwalkers.

Sunshine Coast Council proudly partnered with the Australian Government, which contributed $300,000 through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 9 Councillor Maria Suarez welcomed the completion of the suspension bridge which finalised the works on the Lake Weyba foreshore trail.

“We are working with our community to nurture and enhance our environment and quality of life,” Cr Suarez said.

“This stunning suspension bridge adds an extra touch of adventure for experienced walkers to the Lake Weyba foreshore trail.

“The trail is subject to seasonal inundation and tides and can get boggy after rain.

“There’s lots of vegetation camouflaging the track.

“It’s not for the faint hearted but now with this amazing suspension bridge it’s definitely worth the effort.”

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program helped local councils to meet the costs of projects to create jobs, support new opportunities and improve the amenity of local communities.

“Projects like the new suspension bridge over Horseman Creek at Lake Weyba were selected by the Council according to its priorities,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The new bridge provides an added attraction to Lake Weyba Foreshore Trail so people can appreciate the beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

“I encourage everyone to enjoy everything the lake and the trail has to offer.”

Dogs must be on a leash and all infrastructure is designed for pedestrians only.

The project will be fully complete by May 15, 2024, subject to weather conditions.

Lake Weyba is recognised as a nationally important wetland and the community enjoys the foreshore for picnics, hiking and for launching watercraft.

It is a shallow tidal lake used mostly by shallow-draft boats such as catamarans, kayaks, canoes, kite surfers, paddle boards and small tinnies.

An existing natural trail meanders along the foreshore and is used by riders and walkers.
