Described as both spectacular and elusive, the Paradise riflebird is renowned for the male's dazzling iridescent plumage and extraordinary courtship display. This member of the bird-of-paradise family performs a captivating dance that has fascinated birdwatchers and scientists for generations. So much so, that the Paradise riflebird is the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve emblem. Yet despite its striking appearance and renowned display, much of the riflebird's secretive life remains hidden beneath the canopy.
Born to Dance takes audiences deep into the world of the Paradise riflebird, revealing intimate and rarely seen behaviours through breathtaking cinematography, captured through patient field observations. The documentary offers a unique window into the challenges, rituals, and beauty of a species whose survival is closely tied to the health of Australia's rainforest ecosystems.
The film is the culmination of more than ten years of dedicated fieldwork by wildlife videographer Tim Siggs. A lifelong bird enthusiast and respected filmmaker, Tim has spent over four decades studying birds and more than 25 years documenting the avifauna of South East Queensland, capturing the behaviours and habitats of over 400 species.
Join us for the first public screening of Born to Dance and discover the remarkable life of one of Australia's most enchanting rainforest birds: the Paradise riflebird.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Tim Siggs about nature videography and the dedication and practices underpinning ethical birdwatching.
