Carronia vine

Carronia multisepalea

Significant vine vital for moth survival

Found mostly in the understorey of the rainforest, the carronia is one of few vines that prefer to ‘scramble’ across the forest floor rather then reaching for the top of the canopy.

When walking through Mary Cairncross you may overlook its twisted base and dark green leaves, covered in rust-coloured hairs.

The carronia vine is the only known food source for the larvae of the endangered Pink Underwing Moth (Phyllodes imperalis). Mary Cairncross is the only confirmed breeding location for this species.

Look closely across the understorey and tread carefully.  You may be lucky enough to witness the brilliant pink wings of this large, endangered moth species.
